God Warriors – Gotteskrieger

Syrien im Juli 2014. Die Terror-Gruppe Islamischer Staat (IS) nimmt das Gasfeld Schaar östlich der Stadt Homs ein.

Kurz danach veröffentlicht der Islamische Staat Videos auf YouTube. Die verwackelten Aufnahmen einer Handykamera zeigen Leichen in einer kargen Wüstenlandschaft. Die Körper liegen verstreut auf dem steinigen Boden, neben dem Kopf eines getöteten Mannes ist eine Blutlache zu sehen. Ein Terrorist läuft zwischen den Toten herum. „Dreck ist das“, sagt er, „Dreck“.

In einem der Videos ist Denis Cuspert zu sehen.

Denis Cuspert, geboren 1975 in Berlin, ist seit 2010 als islamistischer Prediger und Sänger von Naschids ( 1 ) aktiv. Anfangs singt er unter dem Namen Abou Maleeq, später als Abu Talha al-Almani. Er wächst nicht gläubig auf, hat als Junge keinen Bezug zum Islam. Sein Vater, ein Ghanaer, verlässt die Familie, als Denis ein Baby ist.

In seiner Jugend ist Cuspert Mitglied einer Gang. Bis 2004 wird er mehrfach wegen diverser Delikte inhaftiert, zum Beispiel wegen Verstößen gegen das Betäubungsmittelgesetz. Im April 2011 erhebt die Berliner Staatsanwaltschaft Anklage wegen Waffenbesitzes. Bei Hausdurchsuchungen werden 16 Patronen der Kaliber 9 mm und 22 mm gefunden. Cuspert wird dafür am 18. August 2011 zu einer Geldstrafe von 1800 Euro verurteilt.

In “God Warriors”, a radio feature (Deutschlandfunk), I explore the question of what motivated young people, men and women, to go to Syria. Against the background of the current debate on how to deal with returnees in Europe and how to avoid attacks this topic is still relevant. Denis Cuspert was killed in Syria after my feature was published.

The Middle East conflict is an important issue for many young Muslims. Media reports about events in which Palestinians are displaced, injured or killed attract a lot of attention and emotional sympathy. Characteristic of this is the outrage that was triggered by a video broadcast by the television station Al-Jazeera, among others, that shows how a suspected Palestinian assassin is run over by an Israeli several times by car. Social Media plays an important role. An examination of the complex causes of conflicts hardly takes place against the background of such images.

Suicide bombers insist that the victims are the bad guys and they themselves are the good guys with a mission. Even if they kill a factor of a hundred or a thousand more than other murderers, they do not simply want to be seen as criminals.
